Plenty ... abundance ... "that our fruits may abound!"
When I read this passage, I recall a farmhouse in the hills of western Pennsylvania, the Hankey home. As the seminary student pastor of the church they belonged to, I was often invited to their home for Sunday dinner.
What a dinner! Mrs. Hankey didn't just serve meat and two vegetables, a salad and a dessert. Oh, no, she had platters of chicken and pork or beef. She had potatoes and peas and green beans and beets. She had cole slaw and lettuce and tomatoes. And for dessert, we chose among wonderful pies and cakes and puddings and pears and peaches. Not skimpy! Never skimpy! Let your works and your joy abound!
