Our text deals with the cross, Resurrection, and Second Coming of our Lord. But the most unforgettable symbol is of Jesus Christ, the high priest, making a sacrifice of himself on our behalf. Our salvation and hope of eternal life has been gotten for us at great cost by our Lord. To cop an imaginative word picture from the late Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, Jesus Christ is "Super scar," not "Superstar." The latter name comes from the rock opera so popular a few years ago, "Jesus Christ, Superstar." That title leaves an erroneous impression not consistent with the music of the rock opera. The opera portrays very clearly the rejection and misunderstanding experienced by our Lord. True enough, many people try to make of him some kind of popular folk hero -- when, in reality, his lot was suffering. The wounds in his hands, feet, and side and the scourged flesh of his back are vivid testimony to his being "Jesus Christ, Super scar." His sacrifices for us, the depths of his love, his forgiveness ... these are what move our hearts and makes us want to be new persons! That sacrifice, not his short-term acclaim by some as a "Superstar," is what wins our devotion!
