Preparing for ordination was a very crucial experience for me. I spent hours finding sounding boards and then ran all of my theological stances by them. True, it was a lot of work, but the whole process was stimulating and challenging for me. Then came the hard part! The question of ‚--úmy call‚--ù always made me feel terribly uncomfortable: not because I doubted it, but because it was so personal and very ‚--úDamascus road‚--ù in nature. I didn‚--ôt want to share it with other folks who might pick it apart intellectually or scientifically.
One day I was interviewing a minister for a siminary project I was working on at the time, and he asked me about God‚--ôs call on my life. My questioner was also a member of the Board of Ordained Ministry, so I shared my concern with him. He said, with great sincerity, ‚--úWhen we ask you about your experience with God, just tell us. How it happens is different for all of us. We just want to know that you‚--ôve had some experience with God. Don‚--ôt hesitate; just tell us from your heart!‚--ù And so I did.
I have shared my story many times since then because I have found it impossible to keep silent. I have learned, like Paul, that communicating the faith always involves the risk of self-exposure.
