The prophet Isaiah offers a glimmer of hope, assuring the people of Israel that salvation and a new life are close at hand -- a truly "beautiful" message. With God as their protector and guide, the result of this new exodus from captivity in Babylon will bring the people of Israel to restoration and new life. Oppression is giving way to redemption.
Isaiah's servant songs redefine power, not as a militant world knows and experiences it. God's will is not always clear to us, but God can accomplish whatever is intended. A return to restored Jerusalem is a return to a right relationship with God, who will love us steadfastly and will not forsake us.
Israel has suffered for the sake of all who do not know God in order that the world might know God's saving forgiveness. Israel is God's instrument for the future salvation of the world, that she may "be exalted and lifted up."
