The prophet uses the image of a flickering candle. Years ago I remember my mother's centerpiece candle. It always occupied the center of the dining room table. She had a special ring of flowers or greens for every season. After many burnings a hollowed-out well developed. As time went on the wick became increasingly difficult to light. Occasionally the wick would be nearly enveloped by cooled wax making the lighting practically impossible.
