Purity was of highest importance...

Purity was of highest importance to the Jewish religion. In fact, even those who had a sore or spot on their skin had to be examined by a priest to see if they had the beginnings of leprosy. A priest could send the impure man away from the camp, his family, and the rest of the people until he was cured. When it came to purity of the tabernacle (and later temple) and with those associated with the temple, it became even more serious.
