On a recent episode of the new TV series Aaron's Way, the chief character of the series, Aaron, father of the Amish family, now living in an alien culture in Southern California, is summoned to court. It seems he is charged with doing carpentry work without a contractor's license.
When the bailiff asks him if he will "swear to tell the truth, the whole truth ..." he answers, "No." The bailiff, the judge, and all the courtroom are surprised. When asked about his refusal, he tells the judge that according to his religious beliefs, it is not proper for him to swear such an oath before other humans. The judge, showing sensitivity and wisdom, then asks him if he will promise and affirm that he will be truthful in his testimony, and Aaron assures the judge that he will. With Peter, he was affirming: "We must obey God rather than men."
