On a recent Saturday on Long Island, a dozen men and women of various ages sat around a fire pit under a low, dome-shaped tent made from sticks and heavy blankets. A medicine man chanted and banged on a drum while other participants brought glowing hot rocks into the tent. Temperatures inside the sealed tent soared as high as the hottest sauna in any health club. But these people, participating in an old Native American ritual known as "sweat lodge," were seeking more than a healthy body. They were seeking a healthy spiritual path.
