Recently a germ was making headlines. By the end of 1993 the last remaining smallpox viruses were scheduled to be destroyed, thus eliminating the disease from the face of the earth. But at the last minute the scientific community changed its mind and decided to allow the viruses to live for at least one more year. Some scientists believed that the viruses should be kept in case that some day in the future they might be useful in helping us learn how to destroy some other diseases.
