In the report of Jesus...

In the report of Jesus' temptations, we note that both Jesus and Satan repeat scriptures from memory. In previous generations, church school teachers required their students to recite Bible verses by heart. Walter Scott, a Disciples of Christ evangelist in the nineteenth century, maintained that no man ought to become a deacon in the Christian Church who had not memorized the entire New Testament. He stated that the task was manageable. By memorizing a chapter a day, a person could master the New Testament in less than a year, with time out for review.
