Ribbons had been about six...

Ribbons had been about six months old when Wendy rescued him from the animal shelter. The animal control officer said the young cat had been brought in from an outlying farm. Wendy's heart had melted at the sight of him cowering in one corner of the glassed-in space provided for cats. It was furnished with carpeted climbing posts as well as numerous toys. But Ribbons (at that time nameless) was not interested in exploring or playing. His wide-eyed stare conveyed haunted fear. "I'll take that one in the corner," Wendy had heard herself tell the officer.
