Richard Gillett in The Human Enterprise tells of a woman named Mary McDaniel. She worked for 23 years for General Electric in the flat iron plant in Ontario, California, before it moved its facilities to Mexico and Singapore in 1982. McDaniel, Gillett writes, had "every reason to believe that her seniority, her good record, and the plant's own prosperity would see her working there until retirement." She had been planning on receiving more than $800 per month in pension benefits.
