Roy was fascinated by shadows. At a glance they seemed simple. But Roy knew better. Shadows offered contrast and depths to landscapes, photographs, drawings. Lengthening shadows made evenings come alive with mystery and invitation to rest. Midday shadows offered shelter from burning sun and kept sidewalks cool for barefooted kids running into summer. Shadows danced to the laughter of rustling wind; they raced across the earth beneath scudding clouds and soaring hawks.
