Saul's death brought the end to a dynasty and devastating grief to David. He had been like a father to David. Saul's mantle fell upon David, making him king of Judah, as God had determined years ago when David was just a boy. David had already proven to be a mighty warrior. However, Saul's death and the rival nation's recent victory left Judah vulnerable to its enemy as her new king weakened under the pressures of his new office and his grief for an old and dear friend.
