Scientists have reported the discovery of a quasar sending out light more than ten billion years old. One physics professor describes the event as a "major step forward" in providing clues to the origin of the universe. "We're looking back to the time when galaxies themselves were forming," he said. "We're looking back ... three-fourths of the way back to the origin of the universe itself."

By looking back, scientists hope, not only to understand the origins of things, but also to attain a greater understanding of life as it is today.
