In September, 1949, a sect of religious zealots predicted the end of the world, gathered families and waited faithfully for the prophecies of their leader to come true. The incident was given wide media coverage and it was reported that many people throughout the country waited somewhat nervously until the "fateful" day had passed. There were others, of course, who greeted the approaching "doomsday" with humor and derision.
