Several years ago a teenage boy in a small South Dakota community saw a girl about to be hit by a speeding car. Bending every ounce of energy, he raced into the street and pushed the girl to safety, only to be struck himself. During the long months of his recovery, community leaders as well as the girl and her family made much of his heroism. Eventually, he was called to Washington, D.C., and received a national award for his act. Through all the praise, though, he maintained a natural, almost bewildered modesty. "I really couldn't have done anything else," was his basic attitude.
