The sign above the head table read, "John's Kids Say THANKS!" John Marshall was being honored by the literacy council for his work as a volunteer tutor. He was an automobile mechanic by trade. He had dropped out of school following the eighth grade. But, after several short-lived jobs, he had taken some night courses in reading and writing skills ... thoroughly enjoying the personal attention given to him by his teachers. From that time on, he had volunteered whenever he could to help others gain valuable reading skills.
