Signs beside the highway are...
Illustration
Signs beside the highway are scattered across the western United States informing
travelers that they're on the old Oregon Trail. At some signs, you can imagine wagon
ruts. At a few places, ruts are etched in the stone they cross. Also, seven miles south of
Vale, Oregon, at Keeney Pass, imagination isn't needed. The natural erosion has
accentuated the ruts, and as you drive Highway 26, they parallel you on the right for a
while, then you realize that the road was built over them and they soon reappear on the
left.
