The single, most-used description...

The single, most-used description of God in the Bible is "holy"; and Exodus 3:5 is the
first time the word "holy" occurs in the Bible. Most religions possess a sense of "the
holy" as something untouchable, dangerous, or forbidden. Other religions in response to
"the holy" (as Moses in v. 5) order worshipers to take off shoes in worship. But in the
Bible starting with Moses at the bush, we find that for humans who meet God what is
holy is at heart most ethically good, powerful, and inspiring. Holiness, as Moses will
learn, is caring for others at the cost of oneself. Moses' encounter with God's holiness will
result in Moses' nurturing and guiding others. In the Bible, far from being the negative
sense of "holier than thou," holiness proves to be the force and motivation for being,
"dedicated for thee."
