Sir Walter Scott, the well...
Illustration
Sir Walter Scott, the well-known author, was once bothered by a stray dog. Picking up a stone, he cast it at the animal, intending to frighten him away. But he had thrown harder and straighter than planned, and it hit the dog's leg, breaking it badly. Instead of becoming vicious or running away, however, the dog limped up to him and licked his hand. Sir Walter Scott could scarcely lift his head for shame, and he never forgot the incident.
