Sitting at the edge of the rickety porch haphazardly attached to Mr. Hanson's store, Jason drew aimless circles with his toe in dirt so worn out not even weeds would take root in it. But Jason didn't notice the dirt, nor the circles made by his swinging foot. Jason was thinking ... thinking hard ... about baseball. All spring he'd been collecting aluminum cans, taking them to the recycling center, and saving the small change each load brought, hoping he'd manage to earn enough to buy a baseball glove before summer. But he still needed two dollars and time had run out.
