Sitting in the waiting room at the obstetrician's office, Dave took a hard look at his life. He had a good job at the bank, a nice house and two cars, but physically he had let himself go. He had been a good athlete in high school, although he had fallen into a smoking habit when he was 14. During college, he had begun putting on weight and now carried an extra 35 pounds on his 5-foot-11-inch frame. He knew his blood pressure and cholesterol were hovering around the upper limits of normal.
When his wife Susan came out of the doctor's office with a big smile on her face, Dave knew that they were pregnant. He decided right then that he needed to make some changes in his life. He wanted his child to avoid the bad habits he had picked up, so Dave promised himself that he would model healthy living for his little one.
