Some of the feeling and meaning of this passage were expressed in one of the freedom songs of the 1960's written by John Schultz and John Ylvisaker, "They Can't Kill Me, I've Already Died."

When I gotta haul my cross in the dirt,
Chorus:
They can't kill me, I've already died;
