Some of the imagery used here is a bit difficult to translate into today's culture --such as illegitimate children, the notion of a capriciously abusive parent, or sadistic children who deem suffering as pleasurable. There is a sports concept, however, that nicely makes the same point.
When I was in seminary, I had a philosophy professor who was a rather stringent taskmaster. The classroom lectures proceeded at a quick pace; the homework assignments were burdensome; the study questions and outlines for the examinations were extensive; but the test was modest.
