In the Star Wars...

In the Star Wars movies, the main villain is Darth Vader. He's always saying, "Never underestimate the power of the dark side." The movies try to picture for us the struggle between the bright side and the dark side of personality. In the second movie, The Empire Strikes Back, Luke faces a test of will when he enters a cave under a tree. He duels against a figure that looks like Darth Vader. Luke lops off the creature's helmet and sees the face inside, and the face is himself! Toward the end of the movie, Luke fights Vader for real. In the heat of the battle, Darth Vader tells Luke that he is Luke's father. In the last movie, Return Of The Jedi, they fight again. Luke says he knows there is good in Darth Vader, and he can reject the dark side and fight for good. Of course, the evil Darth Vader repents and dies a hero fighting against the evil empire and Luke gives him a hero's funeral.
The truth is, we all have a dark side. We fight against the shadowy self we don't want, but when we lop off its helmet the face inside is our own. The dark side, the old Adam that won't accept love or limits, wants out sometimes. But we can reject the dark side and fight for good. Or rather, accept the dark side and use its strengths for good.
