In Steven Spielberg's powerful film version of The Color Purple, a brutalized black woman stumbles into a mercantile to buy groceries for her white mistress. So bruised around the eyes she is from ugly treatment gotten in the street, she literally cannot focus on the grocery list enough to know which items to go after. A compatriot, another poor black woman (in fact, the heroine of the tale) quietly interrupts her own shopping, takes the slip of paper, and quickly and methodically collects all the items.
