The story is told that a great scholar/teacher used to doff his hat when he entered the classroom. Students wondered at this peculiar habit. The custom had always been that students would rise when the teacher entered and they would be the ones to doff their hats in deference to their teacher.
When asked why he did this the teacher simply remarked that he was always aware that in his classroom there may be students who will achieve far more than he, reach intellectual heights that he had not been able to attain, and who would make large contributions to the field of knowledge as well as their fellows. Thus, he doffed his hat in honor of the yet unexpressed genius.
