In the summer of 2003, there was a major power failure that affected large parts of the
northeast. In New York City -- "the city that never sleeps," that place of constant striving
-- people learned some new lessons about "making the most of the time." After the power
abruptly went out, when the subways stopped running, when it was no longer possible to
surf the internet or sit in front of a television, suddenly New Yorkers discovered some
different ways to use their time. After some initial worries about terrorism and looting,
much of the Big Apple settled down to a slower pace.
