The teacher asked the class, "Where is the elephant found?"
One child looked puzzled and then raised his hand and answered, "To tell the truth, the elephant is such a big animal that it's never lost."
This humorous truth is about all that isn't lost in our reading from Luke.
We have three instances of lost-ness in this pericope -- the sheep, the coin, and the son, but not an elephant. The basis for rejoicing is the lost has been found. Being somewhat absentminded, I can really relate to the joy of finding my many things that are lost daily.
