The Temple of Israel had many courtyards. The outer area was called the court of the Gentiles. A non-Jewish person could not go beyond that point. In front of the Temple was the court of women. Women were not allowed to go up the steps into the Temple area itself. Jewish men were allowed around the Temple, but only the priests could go inside. In the back part of the Temple, separated by a curtain, was the Holy of Holies. Only the High Priest was allowed to enter, and then only once a year, on the Day of Atonement.
