In their book The Fourth Turning: An American Prophecy (Broadway Books, 1997), William Strauss and Neil Howe describe the cycles of history that have brought the Anglo-American story to its present point in history. This point is the fourth turning, entering a cycle of crises that should play itself out in the first quarter of this new century. Strauss and Howe have researched the signs of the times for the past five-and-one-half centuries to discern the four-fold pattern of turnings.
