There is an extraordinary power in the calling of someone by name. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was noted for the importance he placed upon calling people by name. The practice of doing so was one of the elements that characterized his popular presidency, especially in the days of the Great Depression where economic instability had so often robbed people of their dignity and identity. The power of naming is recalled in this text in Christ's calling to Mary and her subsequent recognition of his identity.
