In the third grade, I was chosen to narrate the annual Christmas play in my elementary
school. I was to stand before hundreds of people and announce the program and share
various monologues written for the production by my music teacher. As the day
approached, I saw an article in the newspaper about my school and the production. I was
immediately afraid when I realized there would be hundreds of people in attendance that
evening. My music teacher sat me down and said, "David, you know this script, you have
the voice, you will do this." Notice she said, "You will do this." She promised
me that day that she would be in the wings to help me if I needed it. I was confident that
evening in my red sweater and plaid red pants as I led the Christmas production. When it
was all over, my reward was a kiss from the teacher.
