The title of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's greatest book proved to be prophetic. First published in German in 1937, The Cost of Discipleship is a powerful call to reject the easy ways of the pre-war church, the life of "cheap grace," and to embrace the costly grace of the Gospel of Christ. In Chapter 4, Bonhoeffer shows that discipleship's cost is summed up in the cross, that those who follow and obey Jesus must be prepared to follow as far as Jesus himself went. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was executed at Flossenberg concentration camp on April 9, 1945, just days before the Allies liberated it.
