Toyohiko Kagawa (1888-1960) was a Japanese Christian social worker who wrote poetry, novels, essays and religious studies. He was arrested in the Second World War for pacifism. After the war he worked with the poor and the ill in the slums of Japanese cities, always faithful to his country, his people, and to God. One of the insightful things he wrote has spoken to me by its simplicity and reality: "Our greatest temptations: in youth -- sex, in middle age -- money, in old age -- power."
