Thanksgiving is a strange celebration. On the one hand, it is a national holiday. It recalls an occasion of thanksgiving on the part of our pilgrim ancestors. But it is seriously blemished by the recognition that the day celebrates the thankfulness that arose while Europeans were in the process of stealing land that didn't belong to them. The thankfulness is set in the context of an imperialistic pride that now both embarrasses and convicts us.
