Two stories emerge from the rancor of slavery in this country that underscore the concept of a priceless redemption. Although there were, for short periods, enslavements of whites (Germans and Irish, for example), the most enduring slavery was of people of African origin. In 1836, the capture of the "Negro" wife of Chief Osceola of the Seminoles ignited the Second Seminole War. Osceola would not pay to have her returned, since she had been kidnapped. The incident occurred when the chief (himself of Indian-Negro descent) travelled with his wife and friends on a trading expedition.
