An uncle and aunt in the film Avalon have the habit of always being late for family gatherings. As the family patiently waits for their arrival on Thanksgiving Day, the hungry children become too much and the impatient adults finally decide to start eating without the missing couple.
Late as usual, the couple enters the room and the shock of disappointment registers upon their faces. Hurt and angry, the uncle cries out: "You cut the turkey without us!" The shalom of the extended family was broken. As the uncle and aunt leave, the viewer realizes that the extended family will never be the same again.
The younger generation portrayed in the film didn't understand. Their attitude was: "Let them go. They will get over it." Sometimes tradition is more important to people than family. The Pharisees in our text couldn't get past tradition, either. As a result they missed the real healing touch of Christ in the family of God. Traditions can still become a barrier to the deeper issues and ultimate loyalties in life.
