Until the film, many people had hardly heard of Gandhi. Of those who had heard of him, few knew of his education. This strange man captured the attention of the masses and the leaders by emptying himself of privilege. He emptied himself of his ability to hold himself above the poor and the oppressed.

Ghandi took the role of servant. This is a role of choice; he was not a slave. He chose to lead through servanthood, but he did not choose to become powerless.
