The U.S. Bureau of Internal Revenue astounded 1920s gangster Al Capone by demanding millions of dollars in back taxes. In a moment of transparency, Capone replied, "They can't collect legal taxes from illegal money." Among other things, Jesus was objecting to the illegal practices the temple merchants used to collect "legal" temple tax from pious pilgrims. It led to his famous cleansing of the Lord's house in Jerusalem.
