A very popular newscaster seemed to have everything he needed. His program was
broadcast on many radio stations, and he had written numerous articles and books. His
popularity has also made him a success financially.
While on vacation in Arizona in 1971, this newscaster and his wife slipped into a little white clapboard church for the Sunday morning service. Seeing a dozen or more people sitting on wooden folding chairs brought back memories of the newscaster's childhood. He remembered that as a child he had one night knelt by his bed and received Jesus Christ as his Savior.
The pastor announced that he was going to speak on baptism. The newscaster yawned, but then became very attentive as the pastor spoke on giving one's entire life to serve Christ. The visitor thought, "Many years ago, I had asked to be saved, but had I offered to serve? I began to realize how much of me I had been holding back." That morning the issue became very clear, and Paul Harvey surrendered his life completely to Christ. He made a public confession of his sins and his faith before others.
Reflecting upon the experience a year later, Paul Harvey said, "Though I had learned John 3:16 early in life, it took me 'til last to learn the meaning of Jesus' words: 'If you love me, keep my commandments.' The Christian life is one of obedience, not partnership."
