In "The Vision of Sir Launfal," Lowell tells of Lancelot's search for the Holy Grail, the cup from which our Lord and the disciples drank at the Last Supper. We follow Sir Lancelot as he pursues his "magnificent obsession." He rides from the palace with his head high, scarcely noticing the beggar at the gate. Gone for months, and not finding the Holy Grail, Lancelot turns homeward. Dejected, he comes near the palace. He observes a man at the gate, and it registers with him that this is the beggar whom he had ignored as he started out on his mission.
