This was one of Archbishop William Temple's (98th Archbishop of Canterbury) favorite biblical passages, because for him it described the church as being for the whole world. Ezekiel's idea (40:2) of the Temple apart from the world, alone on the hill of Zion, was contrary to Temple's thinking and that of this Revelation passage which sees the ideal of the New Jerusalem as the whole, entire city being the Holy of Holies. He saw this as an indication that we cannot be Christians all by ourselves, and only a Society can witness to society about what a society should be.
