We are climbing Jacob's ladder...
Illustration
We are climbing Jacob's ladder and every rung goes higher, higher. Jacob's dream perhaps is made all the more vivid since his pillow that night was a stone. The dream was a restatement of God's promise to Abraham and his descendants to make of them a great people and deliver them to a promised land. Jacob may seem an unlikely character to receive this renewal of the promise, for he was a greedy man who stole his brother's birthright, who deceived his father as he was dying, who hid behind his wife and children in times of conflict. He is no hero of the faith like his grandfather Abraham.
