We are unsure of exactly what heresies or sub-Christian practices troubled the church at
Colossae. In Paul's first chapter, we have some indication that the heresies there clustered
around their misunderstanding of Christ and his work. Could their false doctrine have
been some sort of gnosticism where Christ "appeared" to be a man? Gnostics were certain
that God could never become flesh. Paul made it clear in his first chapter that Christ was
the centerpiece of the church and all its work. Twice the apostle used the same word
when he talked about the work of Christ.
