At a weekly Bible study...

At a weekly Bible study for pastors, one of the group shared his intention of being arrested the following week. He had spent many hours in prayer. He had talked with friends and others. He had struggled long with the decision, and he felt he could no longer keep silent. He had to act in a way that was consistent with the presence of Christ in his life. For him the only choice was to stand with the witnessing community who would together face arrest non-violently.
It's called "civil disobedience" but for this pastor it was really obedience. It was his obedience to the Good News of Christ's death and resurrection. It was his response to God's demand for justice. It was obedience to the power of God's love in his life. He couldn't keep still, for he had encountered the power of Christ crucified and resurrected. And he felt assured by the words we must obey God rather than human beings.
