When I was in Israel...
Illustration
When I was in Israel, I visited the Church of the Multiplication, which was built in the third century. The walls still display the mosaic depicting the feeding of the five thousand. It fascinated me to see what that unknown artist would choose as the most significant point in the story. It was not a picture of the multiplied food, nor of the disciples running around trying to feed the multitude. The central focus of that mosaic picture was the five loaves and two fish. It's as if the artist wanted his viewers, above all else, to remember the willingness to share produced this great miracle.
