When I was in seminary...

When I was in seminary I worked with a pastor who taught me so much about the ministry and the church. I studied the academics in the classroom and went out to work in the church with this special man who shared with me theory and practical application.
One of the many things that he taught me was it is not ourselves that we preach. That doesn't mean that we don't relate personal testimonies or stories from our life, but that it is Christ that we preach as the helper and not ourselves. The day before I left to travel back to my home annual conference to be ordained as deacon, my co-worker gave me this bit of clergy advice: "Check your hat size when you are ordained tomorrow and then check it when you retire, if it is the same, they you have shared a very successful ministry of Christ." -- Smith
