When my wife's grandmother was...
Illustration
When my wife's grandmother was a young child, growing up in Poland, she was sent out alone into the fields to shepherd the sheep for several days at a time. Every few days someone would bring her food and other necessities for living in the out-of-doors, but for the most part she shepherded the sheep alone, day and night.
How could her family entrust such a young child with so great a responsibility? Probably because she had proven her ability, as a shepherd, while working with others.
